The community of Chambers County is mourning the tragic loss of Jay’Shawn Godfrey, a 19-year-old student whose life was cut short in a devastating crash Friday evening.
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the crash occurred around 7 p.m. on April 10 along FM 563, just south of Interstate 10. Investigators say a 2005 Chrysler 300 left the roadway for reasons still under investigation before striking a tree.
Authorities confirmed that all four occupants of the vehicle were killed at the scene.
Jay’Shawn Godfrey was among the passengers, along with the driver, Kara Beagle, 37, and two juveniles, ages 17 and 15, whose identities have not been publicly released. Officials have stated that next of kin notifications have been completed for all victims.
Preliminary findings indicate that speed may have been a contributing factor in the crash, according to investigators. However, the exact circumstances surrounding the incident remain under review, and an autopsy will be conducted as part of the ongoing investigation.
The loss has deeply impacted Liberty Independent School District and the Liberty High School community, where Jay’Shawn was a student. Counseling and support services have been made available as students, staff, and families cope with the sudden and heartbreaking tragedy.
As the community reflects on this loss, Jay’Shawn Godfrey is remembered as a young life full of promise, taken far too soon. His passing leaves a lasting void in the hearts of those who knew him.
May he rest in peace, and may his loved ones find strength and comfort in the days ahead.
